Yesterday the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Chemicals & Fertilizers, and Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Petroleum & Natural Gas launched the central government’s ambitious scheme Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Karnataka at Hubballi, Karnataka.
During the launching program, about 30 PM Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries were provided security deposit free LPG connections by the three oil marketing companies by the Ministers.
In India, there are about more than 24 crore families. Of these, about 10 crore families are still deprived of LPG as cooking fuel and have to use firewood, coal, dung cakes etc as primary source of cooking. Using these as a source of cooking cause smoke from burning and such fuels causes alarming household pollution and adversely affects the health of Women & children causing several respiratory diseases/disorders.
According to the WHO report, smoke inhaled by women from unclean fuel is equivalent to burning 400 cigarettes in an hour. Besides this, women and children have to go through the drudgery of collecting firewood.
The main motto of the scheme is to provide a healthy environment for the women & children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel LPG. Thus, they do not have to compromise their health in smoky kitchens or wander in unsafe areas collecting firewood.
The Indian Government’s ambitious scheme Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was initially launched in India by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.
Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the target of providing 5 Cr LPG connections to the socially and economically backward families with a support of Rs. 1600 per connection in the upcoming 3 years has been set.
